Vision Clinic

What is vision?
Vision is the ability to identify, interpret, and understand what is seen.  It is a learned and developed process that begins at birth.

What is vision clinic?
Vision clinic is an optional service that is provided by Easter Seals DuPage.  The clinic involves a screening of a child’s vision, and a consultation with Dr. Maze, a developmental optometrist, and with Kathi Wieringa, an occupational therapist, to develop a treatment plan based on the results of the screening.  The goal of this screening is to identify any potential visual problems that may be impacting a child’s ability to function, and make recommendations for activities to complete at home or in OT to improve these visual skills.  Recommendations for more extensive testing may also be recommended.  This screening should not replace a comprehensive eye exam, but is meant to provide useful information regarding functional vision skills and therapeutic activities to improve vision.

How do I sign up if I’m interested in this service for my child?
Speak to your child’s treating therapist to further discuss if this is a service that would be beneficial for your child.  Vision clinic is held on the first Wednesday of the month with ? hour appointments scheduled between 1-5 pm. Contact Judi Brockmeyer at (630)620-4433 to sign up for a time.  In order to attend vision clinic a child must have a prescription for occupational therapy from a treating physician and a ? hour of occupational therapy will be billed to your insurance.  There is also a $30 charge for the Dr. that is due at the time of the appointment.  Please inquire about our fee assistance program for this service if needed.

What can I expect from this appointment?
Dr. Maze will evaluate your child’s acuity, tracking skills, saccadic eye movements, eye teaming, refractive error (near/far sightedness), visual attention, and depth perception.  Other skills may be assessed as needed.   The screening will take about about 10-20 minutes,  and the remainder of the time is dedicated to discussion and explanation of the results with family members.  You will be sent home with activities to improve vision, if needed, and a report with the information talked about during the assessment will be sent home to you in a few days.  This information will also be shared with your child’s treating therapist.
