“All About Babies”

A series of courses on Assessment and Treatment

Strategies for children from Birth to 18 months

Instructor: Diane Fritts Ryan, OTR/L

Each day of this workshop series will develop or enhance the therapist’sknowledge and skills related to evaluation and treatment of infants and toddlers. Upon return to the clinic, therapists will be able to integrate knowledge and skills to evaluate and develop treatment plans for children with deficits in posture,upper extremity,hand,visual and playskills. The workshop material is divided by age of the client and individuals may participate in all or one to two of the sessions.

January 30, 2010- 6 Months to 12 Months
February 20, 2010- 12 Months to 18 Months

The Sensory Profile School Companion and other Best Practices with Children, Families, and Schools
Serving children in school and home settings is a complex and rewarding experience.  For children, these two settings represent the most important learning contexts supporting their development.  Therapists, teachers, and family members provide the structure for learning in these contexts.  In this workshop, we will explore evidence based ways to be effective in these endeavors.  We will address general classroom and home supports as well as meeting specific needs of children with various disabilities (including Asperger, autism and ADHD) in individualized intervention plans.

Treatment of the Child with Hypotonia
This three-day course on treating the child with hypotonia will emphasize lab activities, lecture material, and videotape treatment demonstrations on a patient with hypotonia and major sensory system deficits. The instructor will treat a child each day to demonstrate examples of treatment.  Course attendees should be prepared to participate in lab and lecture environment.  This course  addresses intervention for children from infants through young adults. Group size is limited to 40 participants.

Making a Splash
Pediatrics in the Pool 

This two-day workshop is a treatment strategies course for physical and
occupational therapy professionals who use aquatic therapy with pediatric
clients. The course will focus on assessment, treatment planning, intervention
strategies, goal writing and a literature review discussing what evidence-based
information is available for pediatric aquatic therapy. The course will include
 lecture, demonstration and lab work. Participants in this course should have
basic knowledge in hydrodynamic principles, aquatic safety, and administration.

Pediatric Therapeutic Taping Improved Alignment and Neuromuscular Re-Education
This conference will focus on use of static and dynamic taping techniques to facilitate improved alignment and muscle re-education for function in the pediatric population.  Developmental and biomechanics in relation to treatment will be reviewed.  Tapes and interventions used include:  rigid strapping tape, KinesiotapeŽ, velcro patches with elastic straps, neoprene wraps, and Theratogs™.

Advanced NDT Based Therapeutic Aquatics for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
and other Sensory Concerns

This workshop is an advanced level course that is designed for the
experienced health care professional (physical therapist, occupational
therapist, and speech and language pathologist) and paraprofessional currently
working in the aquatic environment.  The course will focus on evaluation, goal
writing, treatment planning, and aquatic treatment strategies for children with
Autism Spectrum Disorders and other Sensory Concerns.

Advanced Pulmonary Course
A 3 day Pediatric Lab Course
Following the framework established in the introductory pulmonary course, the Advanced course will focus on applying evidence based concepts of multi-system integration to clinical siutations with a special focus on the role of the cardiopulmonary system in the patient's rehabilitation program. The course will be interspersed with labs to refine handling techniques that were introduced in the basic course as well as labs working on the process of integration the material into everyday clinical practice.

 The P.A.L.S.S. Club (Practice and Learn Social Skills)
Curriculum Guide & 3 Hour Phone Consultation
Learn how to utilize this new therapy technique with children who have challenges developing social skills naturally.
P.A.L.S.S. Club Curriculum Package
The Curriculum has been designed by Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region Occupational Therapists and Speech-Language Pathologists to help other professionals implement a social skills group for children, ages 5 years old through 12 years old, who have difficulty making and keeping friends due to struggles with a variety of social skills.
Curriculum Guide Includes:
28 Social Skills Lessons that may be modified and altered as appropriate for your group’s needs.
Guidance to identify and assess children who would benefit in The P.A.L.S.S. Club.
Strategies for providing parent education and training in social skills.
Simple modifications and behavioral strategies to use when running The P.A.L.S.S. Club.
3 Hour Phone Consultation:
After you review the curriculum guide, a trained and experienced Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region therapist will provide consultation, guidance and assistance in using and modifying the P.A.L.S.S. Club Curriculum.
